About

Welcome to my virtual home!
I’m Nita Upchurch, a holistic home consultant, interior designer, promoter of “less is more,” and now blogger and writer. I live in America’s heartland (Iowa) with my husband Gene and Layla, our tail-wagging rescue that continually reminds us to live with joy. This site came to be out of my passion to share insights and inspirations on a grander scale .
It seems interiors have been a passion most of my life, starting in Kindergarten drawing floor plans in the gravel on the school playground to planning my dream home in high school. From the age of 10 through my teens, I discovered refinishing and repurposing furniture, landscape design, sewing and cooking. I’ve always had an inner infatuation with turning a house into a home. As I grew, my college and professional experiences opened me to deeper understandings of what makes a home flourish, I discovered how our surroundings affect our perceptions and emotions, how it influences our attitudes and actions, how relationships respond, how our physical wellbeing is affected, and how everything affects everything, literally and energetically.
This blog is where it all comes together. You’ll find everything from home tours and design advice to tips and inspiration from my experiences and research (as well as other experts) to discovering how our spirit connects with our home that then connects to the planet to form a unique bond. At the foundation of everything are my beliefs that good design is as much about wellbeing, emotions, and mindset as visual beauty and function, and that when we savor simplicity with contentment our daily life is more enjoyable, even miraculous. I’m also a believer in purposeful design; looking beyond trends to create a timeless home that is about you and your story and lifestyle, as well as being respectful of the planet.
I love all design styles, which makes teaming with others a delight. But when categorizing my personal style, I describe it as ‘casual elegance’ – it’s a relaxed elegance that breathes and warmly embraces those who enter from the moment they step inside. It’s a simple elegance found in simple clutter-free living, yet at the same time it meets our needs, uplifts, calms, and nurtures the soul. All this goes hand-in-hand with my love of using a soft muted palette of colors that energizes strategically placed splashes of interest, creating places for the eyes and mind to fall in love. Yes, my mantra says it all, “Less is More” and I am so glad you are here to share this journey.
