THE BEFORE

  • A small, underutilized room yearning for an uplifting makeover. The goal: to be functional yet calming, light, and fresh.
  • New color choices were a priority. We can only guess that the bright yellow and mustard palette was intended to brighten the space, but instead, it caused a sickening feeling in people, which then caused them to dread the lower level.
  • Notice the open door and cabinet in the last picture; the walls next to them need to be removed to open more space.

THE AFTER TRANSFORMATION

  • Changing the door to a sliding glass door allowed daylight to enter the hallway, and it eliminated a door swing. This one change lightened and opened the space greatly.
  • Built-in cabinets on two walls created much-needed storage. Storing things behind doors created a clean, fresh feeling. Utility devices were hidden, and electronic devices were moved to a utility room.
  • The space in front of the electrical panel had to be accessible, so using easily moveable storage such as a trunk on wheels and a pegboard maximized storage for an awkward space.
  • Bi-fold doors open to long shelves that provide flexible storage.
  • The open-shelf cabinet was repurposed from another room in the house and created quick access for frequently used items.
  • Changing the color palette to a combination of two warm whites instantly creates brightness, freshness, and cleanliness as dimension.
  • THE RESULT is a space that makes doing laundry a delight while providing handy storage.
